The word staking is used broadly across the crypto industry. At the protocol level, it usually refers to value committed to a proof-of-stake system. In consumer products, the same word may also be used for arrangements that are technically very different.

Native protocol staking
Native staking means participation tied directly to a blockchain's proof-of-stake consensus rules. Depending on the protocol, a participant may operate a validator, delegate to a validator or use another protocol-specific role.
The technical purpose is to support consensus and discourage dishonest behavior through economic consequences.
Third-party staking services
A centralized platform may offer a product described as staking even when users are not directly operating protocol infrastructure. The platform may aggregate assets, control validator keys or provide a contractual claim against the service.
Those arrangements add counterparty and custody considerations that are separate from the blockchain's base protocol.
Liquid staking and tokenized representations
Some systems issue a separate token that represents a claim connected to staked assets. That creates additional smart-contract, liquidity, pricing and protocol dependencies.
The existence of a token representation does not remove the underlying staking risks.
